News from Hillside CemeteryMay 2008 Exciting things have been happening at our cemetery over the past few months. A new cremation memorial garden has been built in a special area dedicated for that purpose. There are 96 granite blocks in place, under each of which a container with cremation remains can be buried. The block will then be engraved with the name and dates of the deceased. A circular garden is also available for scattering of ashes for those who choose that method. For several years there has been a nationwide increasing trend toward cremations rather than traditional burials. Many cemeteries in neighboring towns have provided columbariums (vaults for cremation remains) or memorial gardens. Our Cemetery Affairs Committee studied several alternatives and chose to create a unique memorial garden design with granite blocks along stone paths through a wooded glade near the cemetery entrance. Spring bulbs and annual flowers beautify the area and four memorial benches have been donated. A brief dedication service for the cremation memorial garden will be held on Sunday June 1 at 11:30. Everyone is invited to come up after church to see the area.If you have questions about Hillside Cemetery or the cremation memorial garden, please call our Cemetery Administrator at 762-8554.

Are you looking for a final resting place for you or a loved one?Hillside Cemetery offers a selection of burial plots in a tranquil setting where many former Wilton notables now lie. Steeped in Wilton town history, it is often the ending point of Memorial Day parades. Hillside was first used as a cemetery in 1817 after the Sharp Hill Cemetery was filled, and has had several additions of land over the years. The latest, in 1950, was given to the Wilton Congregational Church by philanthropist Charles Dana, who is memorialized there. Although operated by the Congregational Church, it is open to people of all faiths. Perpetual care of the cemetery is administered by the church. |
